Albums Of The Year

1st December 2018

It’s that time of year again…

At TRUCK HQ we’ve been absolutely spoilt for choice for music this year, so we thought we’d share some of our favourites with you all and see what’s been floating our boat. Let us know what you think!

IDLES – Joy as an Act of Resistance

Bristol Punk’s, IDLES’ explosive and joyful tongue-in-cheek follow up to 2017’s Brutalism tackles the past 12 months perfectly within 42 minutes. Joe Talbot’s lyrics on anti-Brexit, pro-equality and vulnerability shine throughout whilst backed by some of the most blistering punk riffs we’ve seen in a few years proves they’re one of Britain’s most important bands for all the right reasons.

Favourite Lyric: Wombic charm of the Union Jack/As he cries at the price of a bacon bap
Favourite Track: Samaritans

George Ezra – Staying at Tamara’s

There may be a fad of favouritism here, but the charm that shines throughout Ezra’s album that is simply undeniable. Named after the owner of a Barçelona Airbnb, George captures all the good things in life; hanging with friends, having a good time and getting away for a while – the perfect soundtrack to one of the greatest summer’s we’ve ever had!

Favourite Track: Shotgun (…obviously)

Fun Fact: George started his own podcast earlier this year. Guests include Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Jessie Ware and Declan Mckenna! Listen Here

Shame – Song’s of Praise

It’s been 3 years since Shame brought sweat to The Nest and what a euphoric rise it’s been and but Song’s Of Praise prove their just getting started. Certainly the strongest album opening this year, with ferocious Dust On Trial, straight into Concrete and lead single One Rizla, it’s hard to catch your breathe throughout. Totally laying waste to modern guitar music naysayers, Shame are what we need.

Favourite Track: Friction

Favourite Tweet: The Sun tried to smear them, but had the perfect comeback..

Goat Girl – Goat Girl

Fact: Goat Girl’s debut has been played 129 times at Truck HQ, and their 2018 Market Stage set only cemented them as one of this year’s favourites. Their furious fearlessness shines with no subtle approach to their lyrics with 19 songs in 40 minutes (and only 1 over 3 minutes) there’s never a dull moment. Long live Goat Girl

Favourite Track: Burn The Stake

Favourite Lyrics: I am a country sleaze/Why are you not a country sleaze? – Country Sleaze

The Orielles – Silver Dollar Moment

Taking inspiration from some of the most obscure, that would elude the average 18-year-old, The Orielles have crafted some of the purest, tender and adventurous indie pop has seen for a while. Constant tempo changes and obvious studio experimentation means there’s a twist at every corner. But it’s the unconventionality that means you’re hooked from the get-go.

Favourite Track: I Only Bought It For The Bottle

Fun Fact: Officially the coolest band in the world. Because I said so

Young Fathers – Cocoa Sugar

Young Fathers simply cannot disappoint, end of story. Mercury Prize-winning Dead and 2015’s White Men Are Black Men Too are flawless and their 2016 Market Stage Headliner spot still remains a personal favourite. Cocoa Sugar further explores Young Father’s greatest talent – that they can’t be pigeonholed.

Favourite Track: In My View

Favourite Lyric: You think I’m narcissistic/But if he’s in the picture/Then I’ll just be in the kitchen making tea Toy

Gaz Coombes – World’s Strongest Man

25 years in the game and the self-proclaimed World’s Strongest Man, Gaz Coombes shows no sign of slowing down. Inspired by Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde’ and ‘Channel Orange’, Gaz explores what it means to be a strong man, with emotional openness and vulnerability. We couldn’t be happier to finally welcome Coombes home as he headlined the Market Stage! What a year!

Favourite Track: Walk The Walk

Fun Fact: Gaz Coombes lives just up the road from Truck!

The Magic Gang – The Magic Gang

We never thought we’d see the day but, 3 years in the making, it’s been a journey but Truck favourite’s The Magic Gang finally delivered their debut – and oh boy, it didn’t disappoint! With classics ‘All This Way’, ‘Jasmine’ re-recorded and polished mixed with new favourites ‘Getting Along’ and ‘Take Care’ truly shows how much they’ve grown.

Favourite Track: How Can I Compete

Fact: Truck 2018 was the 4th year in the row for The Magic Gang.. we love them that much.
